Revolutionize Your Period With Thinx

Thinx

It’s 2020 and I’d love to tell you about a fantastic company called Thinx and their period underwear. I’ve been waiting to write this review for almost a year. I’ll tell you why.

When I was around 10 years old, I started my period. I didn’t celebrate but spent most of the day crying. I felt embarrassed and thought that my life was now beginning to crumble.

I grew up with the stigma that periods were dirty, embarrassing, and could only be whispered about. I hated my body and what it did each month. I also hated the period products that were on the market.

Fast forward about 16 years and I wish I knew what I know now, so I could make my younger self feel more at ease. But now, I am grateful that a company like Thinx exists so young women can be confident during their periods. I certainly wish I had access to the same products.

Experience With Thinx

I’ve been using Thinx period underwear since September 2019 and I don’t see myself looking back. I’ve had such a great experience with this company and their products. I have been on birth control for about 4 years, so my period ended up changing quite a bit. I couldn’t use tampons because my flow was too light to justify wearing one for 2 hours. And pads? We all know they’re not exactly comfortable, even if only wearing them for overnights.

Thinx completely changes that.

I walk around the house, the street, the store–you name it–in confidence knowing that my Thinx underwear is keeping me protected, odor-free, and leak-free.

I used to dread sleeping while on my period. Before bed, I would position my pad or liner in such a way that I was “confident” I wouldn’t leak. Then, I would only sleep on my side while remaining so incredibly tense that I would wake up sore the next morning. Now, multiply that by every day I had my period, and then every month.

Now, I can sleep like a freaking starfish if I really wanted to without the worry of waking up to a Picasso painting on my sheets.

Thinx, I love you so much.

Thins Period underwear styles

Choosing Your Thinx

The wonderful part about this company is that there are many styles to choose from now. It isn’t so much for the looks, but also the functionality. When you are looking at which pair you’d like most, you have to consider some things first:

  • How heavy is your flow on each day of your period?
  • Are you wanting to use Thinx as a backup when using period products at the same time (such as pads, tampons)?
  • Do you intend on free-bleeding in these?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be able on a path to the right pair. The reason these questions are asked is that each pair has details about how much blood it can hold. If you have a light flow, you may be interested in the “Cheeky” or even the “thong”. If your flow is heavy, you may consider the “Super Hi-Waist” or even the “Boyshort”. All the information is included in the description of each style and it’s incredibly helpful.

I personally have the hi-waisted, boyshorts, sporty, cheeky, and the newly released sleep shorts!

Don’t know your flow? Take the Thinx quiz!

These Will Pay For Themselves In Quality…

There’s no hiding that fact that each pair of Thinx is not cheap. You won’t find these in a bin of 5 for 20 USD. There’s just no way. Before you roll your eyes, you need to understand that these are unlike any pair of underwear you will ever own. The layered technology in these undies has made my life so much easier as a menstruating woman. I have less stress around leaks and I have not purchased any pads or tampons since October 2019. None. Now I have reusable underwear that I take great care of.

Also, if you don’t want to pay the full amount all at once, Thinx allows you to use Afterpay, which splits your total into 4 monthly payments. I honestly haven’t looked back since.

Taking Care Of Your Thinx

With each pair you receive, you also get a manual on how to take care of your underwear to make sure they maintain their durability. Fret not, it’s not a lengthy document. It’s literally a few directions.

  • If not throwing in the wash right away–rinse your Thinx after use until the water runs clear.
  • When ready to wash, do so in cold water.
  • Hang dry.

If you forget and throw them in a dryer, it’s not the end of the world, but do try to avoid it in order to keep the protective layers in peak shape. You paid good money for them–make them last!

Thoughts After 6+ Months

This underwear has absolutely changed the way that I look at my body. I used to dread having my period, not so much because of pain, but having to deal with uncomfortable and incredibly unsustainable period products. This has changed so much in my life and I couldn’t be happier with the decision that I made.

Now, it may not be the option for everyone, but I think it’s important to know that a company like this exists. A company that is working to normalize this stigmatized natural occurrence.

I had my doubts at first, I really did. I took a chance on Thinx and I’m really glad that I did. I found comfort in their products.

In my time using Thinx products, I’ve certainly heard the critique, but this company has never backed down from it. Never shied away, because they have the data to back themselves up. This product is tested thoroughly because Thinx believes in providing a safe product. The frightening part about traditional period products is that many of the ingredients should be nowhere near such intimate parts. Yes, many companies are taking a stand against that and finding alternatives, but Thinx is really on the right path in my eyes.

I’ve had no ill side effects–not sure what kind I would experience anyway.

The only side effect I’ve gotten from this underwear is a boost of confidence during a time where I used to feel a lot of shame.

Grey’s Grade: 5/5

Without a doubt–this company and its products deserve a standing ovation. If this review has piqued your interest, I highly recommend reviewing their full website. Look into their products, but also their mission.

I grew up very lucky to have access to period products. We cannot say the same for those in more low-income areas. And it goes without saying–in under-developed countries.

Women’s health and accessibility to feminine products should be a natural right and not a privilege.

I looked closely at their missions, Thinx2020, a petition that calls on for every presidential candidate to include a plan for a menstrual hygiene policy. What this means is…accessibility for all to period products so “period poverty” is a thing of the past. I mean, these stats are alarming…

  • 2 in 3 women have felt stress due to lack of access to period products
  • 84% of students have missed class or know someone who has due to lack of access to products
  • 1 in 5 students have struggled to afford products or have not been able to afford them at all

This shouldn’t be something that happens! Enough with the Pink Tax.

My hope has brightened because of Thinx, because I believe this company is truly revolutionizing periods and the way that people are talking about them. Certainly no young woman after me will feel the need to whisper or speak in code about their periods.

That is my hope.

  1. This is so interesting! I have been looking into these a lot, I want to be more environmentally friendly when it comes to periods.

    • I’ll be honest with you, I spent a long time deciding if I was going to take the plunge. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, so everything I write is from personal experience. I was blown away with how amazing I felt in these. It’s a great time to check them out too! Lol I wrote this post and literally yesterday Thinx announced a sale of 30% off all undies! My skeptical friend actually just ordered 2 pairs to try! And you have a money-back guarantee 🙂

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! <3

  2. This is wonderful. I feel so happy for you that your experience with your period is so revolutionissed!!! I use cloth pads and they have changed my life. I’ve been wondering whether to try some period underwear for a while and i definitely want to now!! Xxx

  3. I wish Thinx was around when I was in school. I literally could do nothing because my flow was so heavy. I had to wear a pad, tampon and two pairs of underwear to feel safe. I think I would even use these, when I workout off my period. I imagine that it would help wick away sweat as well.

    • Heather, I feel ya! I spent so many years feeling so embarrassed of my period because it was so irregular. I could never pin-point when it would start. I would have loved to have Thinx around, truly.

Oh yes! I think these would be awesome for working out, and I can confirm…they keep you dry (:

  4. I love my period underwear! It’s expensive up front so I’m slowly adding to my collection but they’re so comfortable. And even if you still want to use something else on the heavier days, it’s great to know you have that double protection x

    • I’m so glad you like yours! Yes, I couldn’t agree more! Even if you use them as backup you still have that sense of “I will be totally protected, even if my tampon leaks for any reason”. Absolutely life changing!
