Gluten-Free With Green Chef

I recently had to eliminate gluten from my diet, which has made my meal-kit subscription reviews even more interesting and slightly more challenging. There are so many people out there who are limited by some sort of diet or intolerance, so what are these meal-kit subscriptions doing to support this type of consumer?

This month we’re checking out Green Chef, which caught my attention because they had a larger selection of gluten-free meals.

Meal-Kit Quality

Green Chef Gluten Free

Each recipe sent by Green Chef came packaged separately in a brown paper bag that was labeled with the recipe name. Each main ingredient was portioned out, and yes–that meant that the onion came pre-chopped. It doesn’t get much easier than not having to sob over freshly chopped onions. If there were any proteins included for your delivery, then they were nestled carefully on the bottom of the insulated box that kept everything at a safe and chilled temperature.

Green Chef’s Excellent Customer Service

I did experience two instances, in two separate boxes, where one of the packed proteins was leaking. Unfortunately, I had to throw out the protein affected. Because I did not know where and when the leak originated, I did not want to chance anything affecting my household in any ill way.

I contacted customer service late on a Sunday evening and received a response within minutes from their team. They did not hesitate to apologize and provide a credit on my account to be applied to another box. Green Chef does a good job of offering goodwill to their customers, which is incredibly appreciated. I admit I was feeling the relationship sour when the second box arrived with a pack of leaking ground beef. The relationship was certainly spared and strengthened with how quickly their team acted to make things right. My third box arrived with no issues. So again, I want to extend my thanks to Green Chef and their excellent team. Thank you for taking care of your customers.

Choosing A Meal-Kit Around A Diet

Recently I had to make the change to a gluten-free diet after narrowing down why I was feeling so bloated and crummy all the time. Making that change, however, meant that my reviews were about to become a lot more restricted. Now–that’s not a bad thing because there are so many of you out there that want to try these kits, but don’t know if you physically can try them without becoming ill. I gotcha. These reviews are for you all who want to try something new, but just don’t know if it’s worth it. There’s always the fear of cross-contamination, which I never thought I’d have to worry about, but here we are.

The reason I gave Green Chef a chance is because they clearly listed which recipes are Gluten-Free without a doubt. Any type of allergen is listed clearly on the recipe cards. I didn’t have to do any deep dives to see if a particular dressing was gluten-free. I had all the information I needed. Plus, if there was gluten in these recipes, I would be able to tell rather quickly.

To give you even more peace of mind, I had reached out to Green Chef’s Customer Service team for a quote on how their gluten-free recipes are prepared and certified. “Green Chef is the first meal kit company to receive Gluten-Free Certification through the Gluten Intolerance Group’s Gluten-Free Food Service program, with two certified gluten-free menus (Paleo/Carb Conscious and Keto). This certification ensures that every ingredient in those plans contains 10ppm (parts per million) or less of gluten.”.

Green Chef Gluten Free Recipe

All recipes that are Gluten-Free will always have the Gluten-Free tag, which makes picking recipes a lot easier. Now the only difficult part of choosing your weekly meals will be narrowing down what you’d like in your box. Because the meal-kit does not only include gluten-free items, please take special care to make sure your recipes indicate that they are gluten-free. Once you do that–you’re on your way to some delicious meals.

What’s The Price Point?

For my review, here is what I picked for my kit. I had 3 recipes for 2 servings per week. The prices listed below reflect this.

If you are a first-time subscriber to Green Chef, then you are likely going to be a very lucky recipient of a discount over the course of 4 boxes. If you’re wanting to try out this service, I highly recommend it. Each box comes with a minimum of 3 meals and 2 servings. The total per week without a discount comes up to be about 80 USD and come cents. Now, that sounds a bit expensive for a meal-kit, but breaking it down, it totals up to be what I’d normally spend at the grocery store for the ingredients for three full meals. The best part about these meals is that there is absolutely zero waste. Everything is portioned out and there are no leftovers.

When I ordered groceries and calculated the difference on my bill for the last month, I spent about 70-80 USD (per week) less than I would if I didn’t have Green Chef gluten-free recipes each week.

Now there were two exceptions to the gluten-free recipes that I chose because the recipes sounded awesome, and I just so happened to have the needed ingredient substitutes on hand. If you’re looking below, I kept a breaded chicken recipe as well as a burger recipe. I had gluten-free panko crumbs on hand as well as gluten-free burger buns. Again, little cost to accommodate my diet, and still so delicious!

First Certified Gluten-Free Meal-Kit Box: Grey’s Final Thoughts?

I’m not going to lie here, I was nervous about finding subscription meal-kit boxes that would work around a gluten-free lifestyle. Green Chef’s gluten-free recipes have made my weeks so much easier and much less stressful. This meal-kit works in two ways for me: it saves me so much time and it gives me ideas of how I can honor the gluten-free dietary requirement I now have without losing touch with amazing flavor. I know my husband is thankful for that.

Changing your diet due to a medical need can be a bit stressful, but this meal-kit really knocks it out of the park. Despite having some hiccups at the start, this is a box I sincerely look forward to returning to even after my review is done.

I give this a very solid 5/5.

  1. Gluten-free diets seems to be the new food and nutrition trend. I love that your meal kit plan allows for your customers to plan around their specific diet plan.

    • I have seen people go gluten-free for diet trends–for sure, but focusing on those who have a serious intolerance to gluten, this meal-kit is a great option if they’re looking for recipe ideas 🙂 I’ve tried a handful of meal-kits and so far this company has been the most accommodating. Thanks for your comment!

  2. Oo, this meal service sounds lovely! I love how efficiently everything is packed and that the food delivers in both the kitchen and the mouth. It is eye-opening to sit back and tabulate our weekly food expenditures and realize a meal kit is not as expensive as we thought it was!
Because of the remote area of where I live, I cannot get meal kits delivered, but this is something I have always kept in mind for the future.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

    • Thank you so much for your comment! 🙂 Oh, absolutely. Sometimes it really puts our budget into perspective. Ahh, that makes complete sense. If you’re interested in meal-kits, they sometimes partner with major grocery stores to sell individual recipe packs! I previously reviewed Home Chef and I believe they partner with major grocery stores.
