3 Easy Ways Grey Decides Which Subscriptions to Try!

Wow, it has been a while, my friends. I hope you all had a very safe and happy holiday! As we’re approaching the end of a decade, I wanted to sum up my experience with choosing subscription services.

After reviewing multiple subscription boxes, I’ve had a handful of people ask me how I decide which subscription box to try and which I choose to pass on (for now). For the purpose of this post, we will be focusing on MEAL kit subscription boxes. Ah yes, that narrows it down quite a bit, right?

So, there are many things that need to be taken into consideration when choosing your next box, but I’ve consolidated the list into 3 steps, because who has the time for 10 steps? It’s almost 2020–more time to crush goals than simply making lists! Let’s GO!

1. How Many Meals Do You Need a Week?

This answer will vary from person to person. If you are cooking for a larger family, keep in mind that you will need to order more servings. Because trying out these meal kits wasn’t free and I’m not made of money, I ended up ordering a very standard meal plan: 2 meals for 2 people. If you’ve read my reviews then you know that I cook for me and my boyfriend on the weekends. This was our fun treat to test out. If you want to treat these meal kits as a “we have no idea what to make but yay meal kit box xyz is our solution”–then, so be it! That will work just fine.

This changes if you want meal kit boxes to completely replace your need to go grocery shopping and meal plan on your own. Before you get ordering, take a moment to think about HOW many meals you’ll need. Trust me, it’ll make choosing your next subscription a lot easier. Plus, it’ll give you an idea of how it’ll fit into your budget.

2. Do You Have Any Dietary Restrictions?

There are SO many meal kits out there now that you can narrow down your search just by including what kind of diet you’re interested in. Vegetarian, Vegan, Pescatarian–you name it; I guarantee there’s a box for it. Rather than going with a “big” name in meal kits, take some time to figure out what it is you want out of this food. Are you looking for better meal choices? Are you completely open to any and all food with no restriction? Well hot damn–that’s nice.

But in all seriousness, focus on what it is YOU want. Take a look at the services’ menu and see if you’d be willing to stick with their choices for some time. In my time testing, I ended up skipping weeks because the food didn’t appeal to me or my boyfriend. The last thing I wanted to do was order a box and get food that did not look appetizing. Not only would I not want to eat it, but I also wouldn’t have any fun making it. I don’t like to waste food, so that’s why I’d take your diet needs/interests into high consideration when choosing a meal kit box.

3. Do You Actually Want to Cook?

Okay–this might sound like a silly question, but it’s completely required. I promise you. Close your eyes and imagine you just finished work for the day. You’re exhausted and you have to drive home from the office. You’re starving and at home you know you can either open up a meal kit box you ordered that provides a recipe and ingredients that are almost fully prepped for you, or you can order takeout.

Yes, there are people who will ABSOLUTELY go for the cooking option because they love the taste of a meal that they prepare rather than takeout. This, of course, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy meal kits. There are options where food is already prepared or curated in such a way that cooking basically isn’t needed. That is another way that you can narrow down your choices.
This doesn’t make you any worse or better than anyone who decides to cook. You’re being smart because you understand your lifestyle.

This list is very short, but does include the important questions that you should be asking yourself if you’re looking for a new meal kit box to try out. I’ve tried out a few and I look forward to trying out more! If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out my previous reviews!
