Home Cooking with Home Chef
Hello friends!
Let’s talk about what’s keeping us from cooking at home. Yes, even during a global pandemic. So many of our favorite restaurants that we used to casually frequent now offer delivery, but that shouldn’t be our only solution, right?
Times are tough with having to keep a more strict budget–there’s nothing but truth there, but if you have the tools to throw something together in the kitchen, you’ll be a pantry-chef in no time. Sometimes getting there requires the helping hand of a meal kit box to get your creative juices flowing!
With meal kit boxes like Home Chef, you are given the tools and the recipes to cook up balanced meals for you and your family.
Who is Doing the Testing?
As we get started with this review, here are a few things to note from my particular review.
- Number of servings (people in your household): 2
- Meals per week: 2
If you choose to try this box, please note that the number of meals and servings are adjustable based on your needs.
Variety of Recipes–Oh Yes!
One of the things I always look out for when trying these meal-kits is to determine what level home cook can make these in the span of time that is on the cards, and without breaking a sweat. Home Chef offers a few types of recipes, such as 15 min. meal kit, culinary collection, meal kit, and oven-ready.
For this review, I have tried one of each to share my experience as objectively as possible. I wanted to show you and tell you what the actual difficulty of the recipes is, what the quality of the products is, and if they actually taste decent. Over the course of 3 weeks, my husband and I have tried 6 different recipes. All had their pros and cons. Pictured on this post are the meals I received and made, with the excpetion of a BBQ chicken flatbread, which was really tasty too!
Home Chef has a really nice recipe selection, which is one of the reasons that I decided to review this subscription. I like to see a variety of protein as well as meat-less options.
And if there’s something that you cannot eat, such as nuts or shellfish, you’ll be able to make that note at the start of your sign-up process.
But if we’re talking about difficulty–even those who are new in the kitchen will be able to handle the recipes. Those recipes marked “Advanced” don’t leave you sweating either, but rather feeling extremely accomplished for tackling an advanced recipe that pleases everyone at the table. No stress only yummy treats!
What Stood Out?
I’ve tried a handful of mealkit subscriptions in the last few years, but Home Chef has really set itself apart. When you get your delivery, you also receive recipe cards. Previously when I received recipe cards from these services, I just ended up chucking them on the pile of mail, or even the junk drawer. Home Chef makes sure that doesn’t happen. With your first box, you get a binder that you can store your recipes in! No more miscellaneous recipes stashed in junk drawers!
That definitely stood out to me, because it encourages people to revisit these recipes.
Another part that pleasantly surprised me is what happens on those weeks you decide not to order a meal kit. For one–you don’t get charged, which is one of the reasons I would cancel. It’s usually no questions asked. But in the case of this subscription–Home Chef–they take it a step further. They respect your choice to skip a week, but they give you the option to donate that skipped meal to Feeding America as a response to COVID-19 relief efforts. This is not the first time Home Chef has been involved with an organization to help feed local communities. In this article from 2020, you can learn a lot more about their contributions and how they encourage their members to consider the same with their skipped meals.
Absolutely outstanding.
Final Thoughts on Home Chef
In my time testing Home Chef, I found the recipes to be pleasant. They weren’t difficult to recreate from the recipe card were portioned out quite well. Between me and my husband, each meal was found to be quite satisfying. I also appreciated the care in delivery and communication from Home Chef.
It wasn’t a big deal at all, but for one of the recipes, I received an email from the support team giving me a heads up that a recipe would have an ingredient substitute due to low stock. I honestly wouldn’t have bat an eyelash at that swap, but the care in communication is wonderful. Especially now when trips to the grocery store aren’t as frequent–knowing you don’t have to go out and get something to complete the recipe is great.
Overall, my experience with Home Chef has been a great one. I think that the quality of the ingredients as well as the variety of the recipes warrants the price point–and it’s not an extreme price point either! It’s WAY cheaper than ordering takeout.
Home Chef starts at 6.99 USD per serving, which is very reasonably priced. Think of it this way–would you rather spend 20 USD (approx.) per person for a family of 2-4 and not know exactly what is in the food, or spend 6.99 USD for your houshold knowing exactly what’s in your meal? I know which one I’d vote for.
Also, please note that if you’re a new subscriber to the service, you’ll qualify for a discount! Over the course of 3 weeks my box prices were: 19.95 USD, 20.15 USD, and 43.30 USD. Every recipes was pleasant and I did not have a single complaint about the service.
Home Chef gets Grey’ seal of approval 100%
