Big Jones (Chicago) – Gluten Friendly Southern Cooking

Grey Reviews Big Jones

Big Jones Brunch in Chicago Offers Delicious Options For Gluten-Free Folks!

Located on North Clark Street, Big Jones catches your eye with their rustic decor that invites you right into a great atmosphere surrounded by delicious aromas. This restaurant earns the right to be my first place to review locally for their gluten-free menu.

I think that many gluten-free/celiac people can confirm that going out or ordering takeout isn’t always easy. It has gotten much easier in the last ten years or so, however, we still need to ask to confirm ingredients and cook spaces. My mission with these reviews is to give you peace of mind when choosing to visit these places.

I am not celiac, but I do have a gluten intolerance, so I am still able to eat at establishments that prepare gluten-containing foods in the same space. For review purposes and for you all, I always ask to confirm if these restaurants have a dedicated space for gluten-free dishes and if they are Celiac-friendly.

Big Jones is Gluten-Free Friendly and they can make a few dishes Celiac-Friendly. For those seeking Celiac-Friendly food–you will not find a wide selection at Big Jones. If you’re alright with the limited menu, go for it. Whatever may be available for Celiacs is bound to be flavorful and satisfying.

Ambiance And Decor = Better Experience

Coffee at Big Jones

Big Jones does an excellent job of setting the mood not only with their food but also with their decor–all the way to their beautiful plates and coffee mugs. Such a special touch makes the experience that much more enjoyable. I don’t know about you all, but when I see such careful attention to detail, it just really makes a place stand out.

The same can absolutely be said to how their food is plated. Our first impression of what we eat is absorbed by our eyes. If the plate is appealing, then you’re more eager to taste. And these plates were absolutely stunning.

Gluten-Friendly Food is On Point At Big Jones!

Fried Green Tomatoes at Big Jones
Roasted tomato and goat cheese omelet and Deviled Steak and Egg at Big Jones

Big Jones has a fantastic brunch menu. It is available on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM CT – 3 PM CT. The gluten-free choices are delicious across the board. Each area of the menu has at least 1-2 gluten-free options. Yes, that includes appetizers, mains (the savory AND the sweet), and even some of the home-baked breads! To take a closer look, you can check out their menu right -> here! And heck yes–it’s mobile-friendly!

For our brunch reviews, we had the following:

  • Big Jones Blend by Sparrow Coffee – Delicious, smooth, and accompanied but the cutest sugar cubes and cream!
  • Fried Green Tomatoes – Perfectly battered for a nice crisp coating combined with creamy buttermilk, deviled egg puree, and pickled shrimp. A must order for an appetizer! Comes with three pieces!
  • Roasted Tomato and Goat Chesse Omelet – Amazingly creamy and perfectly rolled omelet. The Potatoes O’Brien were well-seasoned. Crispy on the top and soft on the inside. Highly recommended!
  • Deviled Steak and Egg – This was my husbands choice and he really enjoyed it. The duck eggs were just runny enough to complement the steak, rice, pineapple pico de gallo. Definitely a great choice for a rice bowl!
Cocktails at Big Jones

I also need to mention that Big Jones is quite well known for its selection of bourbon and whiskey. For brunch, we decided to give their cocktails a taste, too. We had two to try: Blues Caught My Eye (essentially an old-fashioned with coffee bitters), and their frozen cocktail: Bishop. Both of these drinks were crafted beautifully and were definitely very much enjoyed by us.

If you’re a fan of bourbon and whiskey, then this place is definitely a great option for you no matter what meal you’re visiting them for!

Beignets at Big Jones

If you’re not gluten-free, then I also highly recommend ordering the beignets! It’s the closest thing to dessert on the brunch menu ;).

Why Check Out Big Jones?

Whether you’re gluten-free or not, Big Jones is fantastic for brunch. The menu is full of delicious Southern flavors that will take you beyond the typical eggs, bacon, and pancakes. You will find yourself immersed in the flavors, the beautiful plating, and the relaxed ambiance of this restaurant.

For our first time eating at Big Jones, I have to say the experience was very pleasant. We ended up eating inside where the service was attentive, friendly, and very informed about Gluten-free restrictions. We couldn’t have asked for a better trip out for brunch.

So treat this as my Gluten-Friendly stamp of approval for Big Jones and visit their website to make your reservations!
